PROF. KARI ALITALO (CHAIRMAN)

Prof. Kari Alitalo has greatly contributed to the understanding of the pathophysiology of cancer and metastasis. He has isolated a number of growth factors and receptors that regulate angiogenesis. He has unraveled the molecular basis of lymphangiogenesis, the formation of lymphatic vessels, their involvement in tumour metastasis and its inhibition by antibodies that also improve anti-angiogenic tumor therapy. These antibodies have been advanced to clinical trials. He is one of the most highly cited European scientists and he has been awarded several biomedical prizes.
